Here comes the Rheinsteig trail
towards the end of 2005...
When it opens, the Rheinsteig trail will offer tourists a beautiful marked trail to the right of the Rhine between Wiesbaden and Bonn. Its hallmarks will be unspoilt nature, plenty of variety, paths primarily away from busy roads and breathtaking views.
With some steep climbs and descents, quieter forest tracks, surfaces as natural as possible and lots of cultural highlights en route, it will appeal to walkers who enjoy being close to nature, like a physical challenge and appreciate cultural attractions too.
The Rheinsteig trail will run for more than 300 kilometres through the Rhine Valley's wonderfully diverse scenery.
Between Bonn and Bad Honnef: the Siebengebirge hills, volcanic in origin.
Between Linz and Rüdesheim am Rhein: the Upper Middle Rhine Valley, a UNESCO world heritage site with a remarkable concentration of castles. The Rheingau, a winegrowing region extending as far as Wiesbaden.
Links with the existing footpath network mean plenty of scope for detours to towns and villages and opportunities to linger at castles, palaces and attractive historical beauty spots along the way.
