East Bavaria / Bavaria Forest

Scenic beauty, limestone rocks and stalactite caves. Quiet river valleys and colorful mixed forests. Lake districts and magnificent panoramas.

It was here that the first German National Park was established. And art and culture are just as varied as the landscape. Molded since Roman times by splendid architectural monuments.

The Danube Cultural Axis' Medieval towns and castles dominated by the greatest sacred buildings of their time, for example St. Peter's Cathedral in Regensburg or the tallest brick tower in the world of St. Martin's in Landshut.

Grandiose highlights of the sumptuous baroque, too, such as the cathedral in Passau or the basilica in Waldsassen. Also leisurely peace and a picturesque backdrop of gems in art history in a surging sea of wooded and cultivated countryside.

Natur bei ViechtachA network comprising more than 300 kilometers of well-signposted hiking routes, nearly 200 kilometers of bicycle routes and about 80 kilometers of cross-country ski runs give visitors the opportunity to enjoy the beauties of the national park´s characteristic nature, both, in summer and in winter.

Furthermore, the park offers a wide range of touristic facilities free of charge, providing information and relaxation.

The homely cooking ranges from substantial, hearty meals to culinary specialties. Many a tasty dish is prepared from what East Bavaria's forests, its rivers and lakes have to offer.

Venison ragout, mushrooms with potato pancakes or poached carp are but a few of these delicacies.
